Harris County Appraisal District

Learning about how to protest property taxes and market value set by the appraisal district:

It’s that time of year! Property owners in Harris County who believe there is an error in the market value set by the appraisal district have until Wednesday, May 15, 2019 to protest the value of their property.

If you have yet to receive your appraisal notice from Harris County, you’ll still have (30) days to file your protest; that later protest deadline will be printed on your value notice when you receive it in the mail.

You can download a Notice of Protest form directly from the Harris County Appraisal Districts website.

Although there’s a green protest form included in the property value notice, owners are strongly encouraged to submit property protest online via the Harris County Appraisal Districts’ iFile system.

If you’re having a hard time locating your unique iFile number, it’s printed on the face of the 2019 value notice, near the property account number in the upper right.

The quickest option to obtain your iFile number is by using the HCAD mobile app, now available for both iPhone and Android. The app allows the property owner to scan their driver’s license and automatically retrieve their iFile number. To download, please visit the Apple App Store (iPhone) or Google Play (Android) and search for Harris County Appraisal District.

You can also contact HCAD to get the iFile number. However, because of the high volume of requests, it may take several days to get your iFile number.

You can submit your protest to Harris County Appraisal District (HCAD) the following ways:

Online: through the iFile system, with your Tax Account Number and iFile Number

In Person: Harris County Appraisal District – 13013 Northwest Freeway Houston TX 77040

By Mail: P.O. Box 922004, Houston, TX 77292-2004 (if mailing, remember it has to be postmarked by May 15).
